Introduction
English Note
At a seaside inn, Tamiko receives a letter that makes her return home—and separation from her lover—imminent. The couple walk along the cape without speaking openly of what awaits them, watching a distant boat as daylight fades over the sea. Back at the inn, the ceaseless night waves deepen Tamiko's fear that their brief happiness may be swept away. Mizuno Senko's story renders intimacy and foreboding through finely observed physical sensation and the changing coastal landscape.
