Introduction
English Note
In this philosophical poem, Miki Kiyoshi imagines the cultivation of the soul as the making of a rich orchard. German becomes a deeply rooted tree, Greek bears fruit rich in beauty and flavor, and English, Latin, Italian, and French supply grass, hedges, and winds. Entering with basket and tools, the speaker seeks the words of Homer, Virgil, Dante, Goethe, Byron, and Verlaine. The orchard requires thoughtfulness, gentleness, endurance, and tranquility, yet its harvest remains difficult; the poem closes by asking where this year's flowers, next year's shoots, and the snows of yesteryear may be found.
