Introduction
軽便鉄道の工事場でトロッコに憧れていた八歳の良平は、ある日、若い土工たちに交じって車を押し、蜜柑畑や竹藪、海の見える線路を遠くまで進みます。ところが夕暮れ、土工たちから一人で帰るよう告げられ、良平は暗くなる道を夢中で村へ走り戻ります。幼年期の冒険が恐怖へ変わる瞬間と、その記憶が成人後の人生の心細さに重なる過程を、簡潔で鮮明な風景描写によって描いた短編です。
English Note
Eight-year-old Ryohei longs to ride the handcars used on a light-railway construction site. One day two young laborers let him help push a car, carrying him far beyond the village through mandarin groves, bamboo, and hills overlooking the sea. At dusk they tell him to return alone, and exhilaration turns into a desperate run home through the gathering dark. Akutagawa links this childhood terror to the adult Ryohei's recurring sense of isolation and exhaustion.
