Introduction
山の清冽な泉で、揃いの銀杯を持つ七人の少女たちは、小さく黒ずんだ杯を持つ第八の少女に出会います。七人がその杯を嘲ると、少女はフランス語で「杯は大きくなくても、私は私の杯で飲む」と答えます。美しい自然描写と杯の対比を通して、自尊心、異文化との出会い、同調と個性を静かに描いた森鴎外の短編です。
English Note
At a clear mountain spring, seven girls carrying matching silver cups encounter an eighth girl with a small, dark cup. When they mock its size and appearance, she answers in French that although her cup is not large, she will drink from her own. Through vivid natural imagery and the contrast between the cups, Mori Ogai's short story explores dignity, conformity, individuality, and an encounter across cultures.
