Introduction
正宗白鳥が、戦争末期に日本ペンクラブ会長を務めながら「何もしなかった」ことの意味と、戦後の芸術院会員として負う儀礼や義務を自嘲的に振り返る随筆です。藤村の時代、報国団体との距離、色紙に記したキリスト・孔子・ギリシア詩、芸術院総会の煩雑さを通して、組織の権威と知識人の責任を考察します。
English Note
Masamune Hakucho looks back wryly on serving as president of the Japanese PEN Club during the final years of the war and on his later obligations as a member of the Japan Art Academy. Recalling Toson, wartime patriotic organizations, quotations from Christ, Confucius, and Greek poetry, and a tedious Academy meeting, he examines institutional prestige, inaction, and the responsibilities of intellectuals.
