病床の正岡子規が、天井板の木目やランプの火影に次々と人の顔を見いだす随筆です。執筆で疲れた夜、揺れる光が天狗、武者、肺病患者、死人へと移り変わって見えるさまを、鋭い観察と静かなユーモアで描いています。
English Note
In this short essay, Masaoka Shiki lies confined to his sickbed and begins seeing faces in the ceiling's wood grain and the wavering reflection of a lamp. With precise observation and quiet humor, he records how the shifting light becomes a tengu, a warrior, a patient, and finally the face of the dead.
