Introduction
病床生活を送る正岡子規は、四月の晴れた日に久しぶりの外出を思い立ち、人力車で東京の町を進みます。沿道の店、人々の暮らし、花や鯉幟、隅田川の舟を細やかに眺め、伊藤左千夫を訪ね、亀戸天神にも立ち寄ります。身体の疲れや発熱と隣り合わせにある喜びを、鋭い観察と軽妙な自己批評で綴った病中随筆です。
English Note
After a long confinement to his sickroom, Masaoka Shiki ventures out on a clear April day and rides through Tokyo by rickshaw. He closely observes shops, working people, spring flowers, carp streamers, and boats on the Sumida River before visiting friends and discussing waka. The essay balances the delight of renewed contact with the world against exhaustion and fever, combining precise observation with wry self-awareness.
