宮本百合子が、自宅で飼う紅雀、十姉妹、金腹、文鳥などを観察した随筆です。天候に敏感な鳥たちの様子から、雌雄の行動の違い、種類ごとの気質、仲間同士の親密なしぐさまでを具体的に描きます。愛らしさだけを先入観として押しつけず、小鳥にも個々の性格があるのではないかと考える、温かく鋭い観察の記録です。
English Note
In this essay, Yuriko Miyamoto closely observes the red avadavats, society finches, munias, and Java sparrows kept in her home. She follows their sensitivity to weather, differences between male and female behavior, the temperament of each species, and their affectionate gestures toward companions. Rather than treating little birds as merely cheerful and charming, she considers how each may possess a distinct character of its own.
