Introduction
幼い頃、父の留守を守るために飼われていた薄汚れた白犬「しろ」と、関東大震災後に姿を変えた林町の風景を語り手は回想する。犬を飼いたいと思いながら諦めていたところへ、夫が白い捲毛の仔犬を連れ帰る。マークと名づけられた仔犬の無邪気な活力が、子のない夫婦の家を温かな喜びで満たすまでを描いた随筆。
English Note
The narrator recalls Shiro, the neglected watchdog of her childhood, and the Hayashicho neighborhood transformed by time and the Great Kanto Earthquake. Years later, after she has reluctantly given up the idea of keeping a dog, her husband brings home a plump white puppy. Named Mark, the puppy's uninhibited energy fills the childless couple's home with an unexpected warmth and delight.
