Introduction
English Note
Written as a letter to a friend, this essay reflects on marriage, motherhood, and the isolation experienced by young women shaped by the Naturalist era. A display of actresses' postcards prompts Mizuno Senko to consider aging, public judgment, the New Woman movement, morality, faith, love, and voluntary sacrifice. As winter becomes an image of life's later years, the letter closes with a resolve to study, work, and live more fully.
