Introduction
English Note
In this essay, Hakucho Masamune reflects on his habitual early-winter visits to Horyuji Temple. As he considers the Hall of Dreams, the murals of the main hall, and the Kannon at Chuguji, he offers candid and often skeptical thoughts on preservation, sacred images, Buddhist faith, and Yasushi Inoue's The Roof Tile of Tempyō. The closing contrast between a temple visit and a meal of Matsusaka beef gives the essay its wry meditation on the meaning people find in seemingly meaningless acts.
