Introduction
芥川龍之介の随筆『永久に不愉快な二重生活』は、芸術家が人間として営む生活と、芸術家としての生活との関係を問う手紙への短い回答です。芥川は、第一義的には人生の全体こそ芸術の内容であり二重生活は存在しないとしながら、職業や経済条件を含む第二義的な現実では矛盾が生じると論じます。英語教師として暮らす自身の不愉快を例に、芸術と生活をめぐる理念が物質的条件から逃れられないことを率直かつ皮肉に語ります。
English Note
Akutagawa Ryunosuke's essay An Eternally Unpleasant Double Life is a concise reply to a question about the relationship between an artist's human life and artistic life. Akutagawa argues that, in the fundamental sense, all of life supplies the content of art and no double life exists; in a secondary, practical sense, however, occupation and material conditions create real conflict. Drawing on his own work teaching English, he offers a candid and quietly ironic reflection on why artistic ideals cannot simply escape economic reality.
