Introduction

English Note

Two fashionable young hunters lose their way in the mountains and discover a Western-style restaurant called Wildcat House. They eagerly obey the instructions written on each successive door, interpreting every demand as proof that important guests are expected. Only after applying cream, perfume, and salt do they realize that they are not the diners but the dish. Miyazawa Kenji builds the tale through verbal double meanings, repetition, suspense, and a sharp reversal of the hunters' attitude toward animals.

Sample Passage

A short taste of the text.
