Introduction
English Note
In this brief autobiographical essay, Dazai recalls his middle-school years in Aomori and the Toyoda household that cared for him. He writes with gratitude and regret about the family's father, affectionately called odosa, who encouraged him before Dazai had accomplished work that might have made him proud. The remembrance also turns to a Western-style painting the young Dazai bought for two yen and gave him—a work later recognized as an early masterpiece by Munakata Shiko. Warm humor and grief mingle in a compact portrait of kindness, memory, and an unpaid emotional debt.
